The left sash on a French casement window has an exterior astragal that spans the gap between the closed sashes. This model is always clad and has a kerf for the weather strip.

Connect to sash with #6 x 1-1/4 in. Type A Flat Phillips Wood Screws
The locks and extension are secured to this astragal where they meet the sash along the open edge
